Are you looking for a new series to binge watch this weekend? Do you want to find a TV series that you will actually enjoy? A few weeks ago, I asked the women on my fabulous 50s private Facebook community group which TV series they watched. Below is a list of the 10 best TV series of 2019 as voted by women over 50!
10. Stranger Things
Stranger Things is one of the biggest shows of 2019. I watch the show and believe it is one of the best TV series of 2019- and so do many other women in our age group! Stranger Things is an American science fiction horror series created, written, and directed by the Duffer Brothers and released on Netflix. The show is set in 1980’s Indiana. In the show, a young boy named Will (Noah Schnapp) disappears into thin air. Then, Will’s group of best friends including Mike (Finn Wolfhard) lead a search for him that uncovers top secret experiments and a strange little girl (Millie Brown) in the woods.
Genre : Science fiction, Horror, Period drama
9. Peaky Blinders
Crime show fans will love Peaky Blinders. This British crime drama is one of the best TV series of 2019 for so many reasons. Peaky Blinders is set in Birmingham, England in the aftermath of World War I. In the show’s first episode, ambitious gang leader Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) leads a family gang called the Peaky Blinders. However, Belfast detective Chester Campbell (Sam Neill) begins to investigate the gang in an attempt to cleanse the city of crime.
Genre : Historical fiction, Action, Crime, Drama
I hadn’t personally heard of Lucifer until it was voted as one of the best TV series of 2019 on my community group. Lucifer is an American television series that follows the real-life version of the Devil. In other words, the protagonist Lucifer (Tom Ellis) is quite literally the Devil in disguise. After leaving Hell, he relocates to Earth. However, instead of staying hidden, he becomes an LAPD consultant and nightclub owner.
Genre : Urban fantasy, Horror, Police procedural, Comedy-drama, Supernatural
7. Dirty John
Dirty John is one of the best TV series of 2019 as voted by women over 50 and also one of my personal favourite Netflix shows. This American true crime television series is based on the story of conman John Meehan. Meehan, nicknamed Dirty John, conned many women in his lifetime. However, the series focuses on how he conned businesswoman Debra Newell and made her fall in love with him. Ironically, the series premiered on Netflix on February 14, 2019 and is definitely binge watch-worthy!
Genre : True crime
6. Good Girls
Good Girls is one of the most unique TV series I have come across. I was so pleased when it was voted as one of the best TV series of 2019 by other women over 50! The show is an American crime comedy-drama television series that will make you laugh and cry. However, it’s hard to stop watching this series once you start. Three suburban moms are desperate for money and end up robbing a supermarket. However, they accidentally steal money from a gang.
Genre : Comedy-drama, Crime drama
Outlander is an incredible TV series that covers nearly every genre. It is a historical fiction, Drama, Science fiction, Adventure, Fantasy, and Romance series. The series is based on a time travel book by the same name written by Diana Gabaldon. In the beginning, Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) is a World War II nurse that is taken back in time to Scotland in the mid 18th century. However, Claire becomes involved in the Jacobite risings and meets the man of her dreams instead of returning to her time period.
Genre : Historical fiction, Drama, Science fiction, Adventure, Fantasy, Romance
4. The Handmaid's Tale
The Handmaid’s Tale was overwhelmingly voted as one of the best TV series of 2019 on my community group poll. Unfortunately, the series is only available on Hulu. Like Outlander, the Handmaid’s Tale is based on a novel written by Margaret Atwood. The series is set in a dystopian future following a Second American Civil War where “handmaids” are forced to bear children.
Genre : Drama, Dystopian fiction
Ozark was voted as one of the best TV series of 2019 because it is so addictive! The storyline grips you from the very first episode. Ozark is an American crime drama series created for Netflix. However, don’t let its tranquil name fool you. Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) finds out that his business partner was working with a Mexican drug lord- and ripped him off. Unfortunately, Marty is required to pay off the debt. Hence, Marty and his family move from Chicago to the Ozarks to participate in a money-laundering scheme.
Genre : Crime drama, Thriller
2. Dead to Me
Dead To Me is a dark American comedy released on Netflix in May of this year. In the show, grieving women meet in therapy and become best friends. I knew this show would be one of the best TV series of 2019 when I saw that it was executive produced by Will Ferrell! In fact, Christina Applegate was nominated as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the show.
Genre : Black comedy
1. Grace and Frankie
Grace and Frankie was voted as one of the best TV series of 2019 by women over 50 because it was designed specifically for our demographic. This show is an American comedy series created just for Netflix. Grace and Frankie, played by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, are two lifelong friends. However, the dynamic of their relationship changes when their husbands announce they’re in love- with each other! These friends move in together and lean on each other as they navigate their husbands upcoming marriage.
Genre : Comedy
